| phpBB [video] Steinberg is chasing German Presonus division heavily. There is another set of adopted features released and even more! Since version 10 Cubase has become real competitor to our favourite software in matter of workflow and useful tools. Now S1 team will have a tough work to stay among DAW leaders, I hope they will come up with some devastating stuff in future versions leaving ashes behind (as always) and I'm sure that they are more familiar with Cubase stuff than me Anyway Cubase is still ugly ! | As a user of BOTH here they are still two diff beasts to me. S1 is progressing nicely IMO, sure its missing a few things but overall I open it more when doing projects here. Its just too easy to do a tweak on the Song then open the Project Master and update it, saves me TONS of time. I actually like that S1 has less STUFF if you will S1 Pro 4.6.2, Cubase Pro 10.5.20 OSX High Sierra 10.13.6 Steinberg MR816X, Steinberg CC121 2010 MacPro Dual 2.4 Quad, 14 GB Ram |
| Cubase is a resource hog when it comes to video. Running the same project in Cubase I got 36% cpu with the new video engine - just normal 1080p H264. In Cubase using a separate VST(not this tupid video engine) for video like https://vidplayvst.com/downloads.htm I went down to 16% so that was the way I went by. In StudioOne I got 6% cpu and I don't even notice I run video too - that is good work. Never looked back. Personally I don't need thumbnails on a track - just navigate by named markers. For me Cubase Pro 9.5 was a bugfest, and Steinberg showed no interest in fixing it or even respond to support tickets. Every hour on the second of uptime for windows - audio engine restarts - due to something that does not create anything in Sonar, Reaper or StudioOne. So recording over that time slot - transport stops and shown a dialog about dropouts - yeah, you restarted audio engine so it became dropouts. Even Cubase Elements 7 and 8 had no problem - Cubase pro only. Trying to workaround this I looked at settings for Steinberg Pro Audio Scheme - and it didn't work either stopping video engine from starting. I had same settings already before but just trying everything for three weeks until I gave up. And it wouldn't stick as a setting from session to session until I trashed preferences. So to get all color settings and stuff over to new preferences i save to disk. That didn't work either to import into the new settings. So had to do manually the color settings again. Track archive problems with multiout VST's - just scrambled order and f-u-c-k up with error dialogs and stuff. Ghost tracks that doesn't do anything, I didn't even have a reliable track template system. It's still there in Cubase 10 I saw on Steinberg forum the other day. A lot of people using disabled tracks was enough to also get these outs scrambled order and mess of it all. I keep having Cubase installed for notation until Presonus makes Notion usable. But Steinberg key is not even in usb port - I never use it. Had an issue with VST3 multi out instrument and had to check if worked in Cubase, that kind of thing. It doesn't work in StudioOne at all - a BluecatAudio Patchwork thing. Only VST2 version works. StudioOne is light on system - there is no comparison with Cubase at all. If counting video it even beats Reaper. Comping in Cubase was way more intuitive than StudioOne, that's it. But found a good way that works for me. *** Windows 7 Pro * i7-860 2.8 Ghz 16 GB ram * RME HDSP 9632+AI4S+Audient ASP 800 * GT730 *** |
| I upgraded to 10 but didn't get into using it much. Maybe this upgrade will look more like S1 and I can use it more. I was using two interfaces linked together with S/Pdif, works fine if you need to have both running at the same time. I went back to one at a time, but it came in handy when I had some plugs that ran on Cubase but would crash in S1. The midi is why I think Cubase is handy to have around, lot you can do there. Its just too easy to do a tweak on the Song then open the Project Master and update it, saves me TONS of time. I actually like that S1 has less STUFF if you will I agree. Studio One's Project Page is in a class by itself. As to Cubase, yes it's always been quite feature rich over the rest. However, Cubase' environment has never really been very seamless for me. I think there's really something to the less is more concept such as what S1 brings to the table. In the end, it's what you are successful with. PT has always been my 2nd choice. Largely due to the industry wide usage. Not its flow, or startup time. Studio One just plays nice with most everything. From deep Rewire usage to its intelligent Control Link. Where I'd hope Studio One picks up is mostly with Console usage, such as Snapshots, and customizable plugin recall per track. Also better velocity metering because the instrument meters just foolishly only turn full on, or full off. Even sequencers from the 80's showed MIDI velocity, and every other DAW does as well. Such shortcomings are going to always put Studio One in a bit of a stigma. We all have a few moanes and groans of what we might legitametly want, be it better video manipulation (for some) or the incredible MIDI editing power of such programs as Cubase or Sonar. However, history has shown time and again such programs are typically boat anchors in the way of performance, or reliability. Only your computers crashes know for sure. If you are some of those who can put your gloves on, and actually get to work and sure, that means having a few extra fiddles here, or a few extra steps there, but with less menu laiden choices forge on and make purposeful artistic choices instead of fiddling with colors, skins, and elastic doodads, Then video, and multiple use of audio interfaces are going to be less important (as mentioned, use markers for key timing points). Things like swift drag-n-drop and the Project Page, brilliant Control Link, and Melodyne integration will shine. It just makes for a better Skill Saw if you will. Productivity based on familiarity and results will always win in the end. Those are on the job features you can bank on. Oh and lastly, I could handle about 22 seconds of that guy in that video! | Yeah.. I also think that this kinda 'limitations' in customization and less options for certain functions make Studio One so fast and intuitive. Sometimes I'm thrilled when I'm browsing feature requests mostly named like 'PT style this', 'Ableton style that' - hope developers will never go into that kind of concept, because it will probably end up like a Sonar, which is powerful for sure, but it's overwhelming by its package of functions/options which were intended to please every user. Studio one is more like 'Tune to our concept of workflow, maybe you are not aware of this now, but will be more relaxed and effective' In fact, I switched from Sonar X3 (to which I switched from Cubase being charmed by the robust content like VSTs, Addictive Drums etc) Then screenshot of S1 v2 stylish interface caught my attention and just after 3 days of demoing Studio One I chosen few tasks and compared it between both, I could do all them few times faster and completely effortless in comparison to Sonar, and that's why I'm here But anyway my intention of this post was more to point out some of innovations that Steinberg has started to introduce since certain time (probably S1 fast expansion triggered it) not to discredit Studio One superiority Cheers Intel i7 4790K 4.4 GHz, Windows 10 Home (64 bit), 16 GB RAM, GTX 770, RME Fireface 802, PreSonus FaderPort 8, Softube Console 1 |
| Yes, I noticed that Cubase move. Funny that Cubase users are amazed by features like 'Combine selection tool' (Huh, it's so natural in Studio One) and colored tracks in the mixer . I'm very happy they go that direction, though, because I recently had to switch back to Cubase because of one tiny weird behaviour of S1 that makes it impossible to use it for me : when clicking long MIDI notes, S1 only plays back very short note. (see viewtopic.php?f=151&t=36485, if you're curious to know what I mean). For that matter, I wish S1 could just do as in the majority of DAWs : play back MIDI notes as long as they are clicked.. Other than that, I wish I could reswitch from Cubase to S1, because I miss the awesome intuitive no-nonsense features of it - unfortunately except this one. | This is how all DAWs get better - they copy the good bits from each other. Same in any industry really. I'm hoping the next version of S1 will add more stuff to the Chord Track like the alternate voicings/inversions offered by Cubase. Those inversions are the only reason I sometimes start a song in Cubase before moving it across to S1. I have done a feature request for S1. I'd post a link but I can't find it! Chord inversions, where for example, you take the root note of a chord and move it up an octave. Inversions are a great way to get different sounds out of the same chord and/or to transition to a different chord. My feature request is here.
